Estonian phrase translation correction.

Post by pc2 »

salutations,

we translated a little phrase into Estonian. since we are only students of this language, we wanted someone to check and, if necessary, correct our translation and, if possible, point the errors (if there are any).

here it is:
ma vajan panna see raamat sellesse riiulisse.

it's supposed to mean:
I want to put this book in this bookshelf.

is this right?

TIA,
Merci de corriger notre français si nécessaire.

Hello,
ma vajan--I need
ma tahan--I want.

Somehow, "ma vajan panna" looks a bit wierd to me, but "ma tahan panna" is ok. I'm not a native though...

hi TIA,

I'm afraid it's a little too late but here's the truth from an Estonian:
ma vajan panna see raamat sellesse riiulisse.

In Estonian this sounds unnatural, but it is totally understandable.

I want to put this book in this bookshelf = ma tahan panna selle raamatu sellesse riiulisse. <sorry, to be exact riiul=shelf and raamaturiiul=bookshelf, but I mean here our meaning is rather obvious isn't it :) >

yes, ma vajan means I need.
see raamat is correct, but it is this book in nominative. what we use in this case is genitive.

ma vajan panna does not exist - except in jargon perhaps. meaning I need a lay. yep, vulgar.

we think it means something like "I think that you are nice/sweet/cute/handsome".

:D precisely, they think correctly. "ma arvan et sa oled kena" is literally
ma - I
arvan - (I) think
et - that
sa -you
oled - (you) are
kena - nice; sweet; cute; handsome; pretty;

take it from a professional Estonian :D since 1966

aha, that's right. so, are you all of these, or just pretty? :D btw, in Estonian there's no gender, I mean this phrase can be used both ways - from gal to bloke and the other way as well.
