Hi everybody,

Could somebody give me a definition of the world "schizophrenia" which doesn't come from the cambridge Dictionary.

I'd like to be given a definition coming from a dictionary, please. I'm sorry to insist on this point but it's decisive.

Translators, English, American, Australian people, Translators and Psychologists (who knows), Thank you very much for your help.

Damiro

schizophrenia (schizo·phre·nia) (skiz²o-fre¢ne-[schwa], skit²so-fre¢ne-[schwa]) [DSM-IV] [schizo- + phren + -ia] a mental disorder or heterogeneous group of disorders (the schizophrenias or schizophrenic disorders) comprising most major psychotic disorders and characterized by disturbances in form and content of thought (loosening of associations, delusions, and hallucinations), mood (blunted, flattened, or inappropriate affect), sense of self and relationship to the external world (loss of ego boundaries, dereistic thinking, and autistic withdrawal), and behavior (bizarre, apparently purposeless, and stereotyped activity or inactivity). The definition and clinical application of the concept of schizophrenia have varied greatly. The DSM-IV criteria emphasize marked disorder of thought (delusions, hallucinations, or other thought disorder accompanied by disordered affect or behavior), deterioration from a previous level of functioning, and chronicity (duration of more than 6 months), thus excluding from this classification conditions referred to by others as acute, borderline, simple, or latent schizophrenia. Originally called dementia praecox and characterized as a psychosis with adolescent onset and a chronic course ending in deterioration. The term schizophrenia was introduced by Bleuler because neither early onset nor terminal deterioration is an essential feature; he emphasized the splitting and lack of personality integration seen in the disorder.

I have the hard copy but luckily I just copied and pasted from the site.

Do a search for Dorlands and you'll find it (it's hosted by Merck, the US pharmaceutical company)

Some words do have a definition, you just have to scroll the different meanings :)

Hi !

onelook.com checks over 960 dictionaries with a single entry. I don't know how technically detailed a definition you are hoping to find, but here is the URL for the page where I entered schizophrenia:

http://www.onelook.com/?ls=a&w=schizophrenia

You should be able to find a definition to suit your purpose among the choices offered.

ciao,
candi
