English to Scottish Gaelic

Post by Ali Mac Bow »

Is this the correct spelling from English to Scottish Gaelic please.

I love you darling of my heart. Good night

Tha geol agum orsta garigh moi chri ika va

My father was from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and we used to say this to each other every night and now i would like to get it tattooed but i do not know the correct spelling of it. Can anyone please help me? Thanks

I know it's been quite some time but I just saw this topic for the first time. The correct spelling is as follows:

Tha gaol agam ort, a charaid mo cridhe. Oidhche mhath.

I know it looks... interesting, but Scottish Gaelic has lots of letters that are either no longer pronounced but still written, or pronounced very differently than in English. so "charaid" is pronounced like "garrigh", "ort" is pronounced like "orst", "cridhe" is pronounced like "cri", and perhaps most interestingly, "oidhche mhath" (goodnight) is pronounced "ika va". Hope this is still of use to you.

Tha gaol agam ort, a charaid mo cridhe. Oidhche mhath.
Should be :
Tha gaol agam ort, a ghràidh mo chridhe. Oidhche mhath.
Caraid means "friend".
so "charaid" is pronounced like "garrigh",
rather "kharetch" (kh is a throat ch as Spanish j)
"cridhe" is pronounced like "cri",
it's chridhe, pronounced khthee-yeh.
and perhaps most interestingly, "oidhche mhath" (goodnight) is pronounced "ika va".
rather uy-hyeh vah.
