Beautiful antique bottle

Post by laruesonbroadway »

Hello! I have a green glass bottle from Europe. I am not sure what language it is in, but it has 4 sides which are each numbered. The bottle is hand made from the mid 1800's and has a pewter or coin silver overlay. The writing is hand-done in the metal material over the glass. Not only is it in a language I do not know, it is also quite difficult to read. :( I can provide a picture if anyone is interested and please feel free to contact me directly for more assistance. Any help is appreciated!!!

I may have some of the words wrong, so please feel free to improvise if you know a language and the word makes sense in the sentence, especially if my spelling doesn't fit at ALL.

I. Jegeren Flaske mil Nauner, Kluk
II. Mit Mollo erdelle Jörsten sluk!
III. Dogej for Lange lyt mil Raad,
IV. Thi del Kanhande du elir haad (or Raad).

Norwegian (or perhaps danish, but I go for Norway)
Please show the photo, we need to read it correctly to have the true meaning.

I corrected a few things, we need to see the rest and confirm my ideas. Then translate.
I. Jegeren Flaske mit Nauner, Kluk
II. Mit Mollo erdelle Törsten sluk!
III. Dog ej for Lange lyt mit Raad,
IV. Thi det Kan hende du elir haad

I apologize for the pictures being so horrid. My photo editing program is not working correctly. Can you decipher anything from these photos? I have a few more and I will post them seperately

It is really hard to read. But definitly norwegian, though with old spelling (so sometimes danish).
Not sure about the words in italics.

I. Jegeren Flaske mit Navn er Kluk
II. Mit Motto er dette Törsten sluk!
III. Dog ej for Lange lyt mit Raad,
IV. Thi det Kan hænde du blir kaad

Hunter's bottle, my name is "Kluk"
My device is this: quench thirst!
However not for long, listen to my advice
Because it could happen you get horny

I really do not know if "kluk" is correct or what it is.... sorry.
I am just guessing the last word.... it would be written the old danish way, so 19th century style, and it is the only word I could come up with in this context, but maybe a norwegian would find something else.

Hi Elie
Holmegård produces a cluck-cluck bottle decanter.
An alternative translation:

I am a bottle - my name is Cluck
My motto is this - quench the thirst
Not for too long - I caution you
or you may be driven to wanton acts.
:-)
Cheers (in this instance "skål") :-)

Hi elie
Selv tak - det var så lidt! :)
I don't think it is specifically Norwegian to have a cluck-cluck bottle, but perhaps it was popular for a longer time or in a later period there?

Regarding the translation - I think the difficulty in reading the original text led to:
I. Jegeren Flaske mit Navn er Kluk
Which correctly translates into
"The hunter bootle my name is cluck"

Where I remember from bottles I have seen that it should read
"Jeg er en flaske mit navn er kluk"
- earlier all nouns in Danish was written with capital first letters.
Changed in Denmark in 1956 I think.

Another alternative :)

I am a bottle - my name is cluck
my motto is this - the thirst to block
my advice is this- don't do it for long
or you may be driven to pleasure and song.

Cheers
