translation sanskrit-Italian

Post by Minerva »

Hallo to you all! I'm reading Bal Gangadhar Thilak, "Orion, or Researches into the Antiquities of the Vedas", 1893. At one point, he wrote that the Sanskrit word âshu has the same meaning of the ancient greek ōkus but I can not find anywhere the translation of both words, in Italian or English. Can anyone help me? It 'very important for me to know the meaning of this word.
thanks very much from Minerva

Hi,

We think that both words mean "fast" or "quick", based on online dictionary searches.
According to the Monier Williams Sanskrit dictionary, the Sanskrit word "âshu" (आशु - transliterated as "āśu") means "fast, quick, going quickly". According to this same dictionary entry, in Vedic Sanskrit, this word can mean "a horse" (literally "the quick one").
According to the Perseus' Greek word search, the word "ōkus" (ὠκύς) means "quick, swift, fleet".
Merci de corriger notre français si nécessaire.
