Privacy in other languages...

Post by Servien »

Could someone please translate privacy into other Indo-European languages? I'm not looking for words which are the same in English, and already know privacy in Old English was "syndrig". Thanks a lot! :-)

Not really usable

Italian

Theoretically, p r i v a t e z z a exists, as reported at

http://www.garzantilinguistica.it/index.html
(the Garzanti dictionary)

and

http://www.dti.unimi.it/occorrenza.php?z=0;id_occ=305
(main University in Milan).

However, the "privatezza" term is only exceptionally found in print, the common way of pointing to such notion being the English term of "privacy".

CZ = soukromí
SVK = súkromie

In Spanish, "privacy" = "privacidad".

About privacy

Post by ldngli »

My view is that "privacy" cannot be translated into forms which also exist in English, like "private sphere", "intimacy" and the like.

It is a quintessential English expression, possibly rooted in a cultural trait of that country. This is why Italians say "privacy"when they mean staying really on their own. A few of the translations which have been reported have a counterpart in all languages (for Italian: "sfera privata", "intimità" ... ). However it may be argued that they fall short of what "privacy" is.

Secondly, Servien asked his question in English and some of us are replying in French. Of course, on account of his French name and the fact that what is being answered is a third language word, no big damage is being done.

I used to hear that there was no Russian translation of the word or concept "privacy." After living in a dorm for three years, I think it is true! Личная жизнь is private/ personal life, but in my experience friends (and even strangers) expect everything to be open and shared.

ldngli's post is the reason why I do not answer in this section. When one knows it all, one anwers fully to the original question. But one can not, which explains the knowsitall attitude. :roll:

:nono: And for a question and answer in English, it is the wrong section anyway. When one wants to play the little policeman, one has to know the rules.

Pour ceux qui parlent français, donc, aucune raison de ne pas répondre en français dans cette section. La posteuse n'a qu'à s'adresser au bon guichet si le français ne lui convient pas.
