"A senior government official in the Laotian capital, Vientiane, told Reuters seven Laotians on the bus were killed, along with a Chinese person and two foreign cyclists, one male and one female.
Laos has been ruled by a communist government since 1975 and there have been sporadic attacks on state buildings and spots popular with foreigners by unidentified anti-government groups over the years.
Diplomats said the two foreign cyclists were believed to be French-speaking, and may have been tourists or aid workers.
A French diplomat in the Laotian capital told Reuters his embassy had sent a consul to investigate the attack.
``It is too early to say they were French,'' the diplomat said. ``People at the incident thought they had spoken French, but we can't confirm or deny it now.''
