Hi everybody...
I'm translating a short Yoshimoto Banana story for one of my (badly structured) uni courses, and I got totally lost... Well, it's 6 pages, I've managed to deal with most of it, but there are some sentences with which I got totally stuck... I was just wondering if some kind soul might lend me a hand, because I feel like I'm so going to flunk the course...
For instance,
ひとりでいたくないのなら、すぐにそばに行きたかった.
(ima kite hoshii no nara, hitori de itaku nai no nara sugu ni soba no ikitakatta.)
The problem is mostly with the first part, namely what is いたくない? “If いたくない alone, I would immediately have a feeling that I can go”?
And:
今悲しいのなら、今、そこにいなくては意味はない。
(ima kanashii no nara, ima, soko ni inakute ha imi ha nai.)
The first part, I guess, is “If it is sad now”… Is the meaning of the second part “There is a sense to be here now (and not at any other time)”… The structure is like the structure of “must” sentence, so I figured its affirmative…
If someone can help me out, I'd be so so grateful...
