A study by psychologists reveals that satellite navigation systems, in-car devices that use satellite technology to direct drivers to their destination, could be more dangerous than useful. Actually those systems require a lot of additional mental effort and concentration. The study also reveals that audio-only sat-nav devices and systems including a small screen mounted on the windscreen have the same results. In fact danger appears because there’s a mental cost of doing two things at once whatever those two things are. The researchers used a measurement of the drivers’ pupils to show that motorists using no sat-nav devices concentrated better on the road. But sat-nav manufacturers and RAC declare themselves sceptical about this statement. They point out that advantages are significant : devices reduce the stress of getting lost, put an end to arguments with back-seat drivers and can be turned on or off.
