it looks like a strange thing to do, introducing exceptions in an orthography that was so phonetic in every respect except for â/î, especially if it is for one word only (sunt)

For Olivier: Strange and useless reform indeed. Most linguists oppose it anyway. But, like I said, it was initiated by the Romanian Academy + Government, both of which consist mostly of experts in metallurgy and agriculture...
It was meant to make the Romanian ortography more "ethymological", because in most cases the " â " in the middle of the word is a degradation of the Latin "a". E.g.: Latin "campus" => Rom. "câmp". But there are numberless exeptions to this rule. E.g. Latin "ventus" => Rom. "vânt"; Latin "rivus" => Rom. "râu". In such context, some words should be normally spelled with " â ", other words with " ê " and others with " î ". Like I said, it is a stupid and useless ferorm...

Zcalin, you must of been heard Haiducii with their song Dragostea din tei. Please tell me what does it mean because i doubt that dragoste has slavic root like lots of romanian words. For example the most easiest word YES is taken from croatian -->DA. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen lots of your words. They're very similar.
apprentice: Rom. ucenic [uchenik], in Cro učenik[uchenik]
basket: Rom. coş [kosh], in Cro. koš [kosh]
boot: Rom. cizma [chizma] in Cro. čizma
and so on and on...
but still i'd like to know more. by the way...can u translate the lyrics from that song?

It is true that there are very many Romanian words with slavic root, but they were NOT taken from Croatian!!! But from Old Slavic, some 1000 - 1200 years ago.
"Dragostea din tei" => The Love from the Linden Tree.
Of course I know the song, but I have never really paid attention to it, so I don't know the lyrics by heart... Anyway, this is the translation of the title.

Yeah, I know, I was just kidding.
It came from Old Slavic, but still, in that ancient language i doubt that for example word "učenik" was written like that, or even pronouced like that.
I'm going to check it, later I'll tell you.

Bambino, I have just taken a look into the DEX (The Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language) which says that "ucenic" comes from the Old Slavic word: "učenicu".
I have listened to "Dragostea din Tei". The lyrics are not really interesting: most of them are sort of "nursery rhymes" and many words without meaning; apart from this, they present a phone conversation between a certain "Picasso" and happiness.

So, why are you learning Romanian?
I find it a difficult and boring language. If it hadn't been my mother tongue, I would have never ever learnt it.
So far I have begun to learn several languages. But I have "quit" many of them, just because I found them too dificult (like: French, Finnish, Japanense, Icelandic, German). On the other hand, my father is Hugarian and my wife is Greek, so I understand and speak a little bit of both these languages. And I really mean: A LITTLE BIT!!
