Help with Estonian
we are from Brazil (français - Brésil) and we are very interested in learning Estonian.
but we are very frustated about the partitive and genitive cases.
how can we know what is the partitive and genitive of a word if it seems to be irregular? and if it's irregular, why don't the dictionaries have the partitive and genitive forms of the words?
if there are 2 infinitives for each verb, and both infinitives are declinable, do we have to learn the partitive and genitive of EACH infinitive of EACH verb?
we are almost quitting learning Estonian because of the lack of free on-line resources such as GOOD grammars and dictionaries, but we don't want to quit because we really want to learn this language.

we think it would be a good idea to show the patitives in the Estonian dictionary, wouldn't it?

we would like to help Freelang with the Estonian partitive-forms-dictionary, but we initially posted this topic because we needed someone to provide us (at least) a list of partitive forms of Estonian words.

Re: Help with Estonian
Well, by definition, is the word is irregular, you can't guess what the partitive or genitive is. Those cases are not in dictionaries as virtually all Estonian dictionaries are made for Estonians, so they don't need info about the declensions of their own language.pc2 wrote:how can we know what is the partitive and genitive of a word if it seems to be irregular? and if it's irregular, why don't the dictionaries have the partitive and genitive forms of the words?
No, you don't have to. Once you've derived a noun, a participle or an infinitive from a verb, its declension is "normal" i.e. you decline it according to grammar rules.pc2 wrote:if there are 2 infinitives for each verb, and both infinitives are declinable, do we have to learn the partitive and genitive of EACH infinitive of EACH verb?

ESTONIANO
didine,
so, we would have to be native Estonians or move to Estonia to speak Estonian? we can't move to Estonia.
the worst is: we tried to search for list of partitive forms of the words in all the Internet, but we it's being impossible to find.

Re: ESTONIANO
This is just because most of the words are regular, so you just have to apply the rules. If you have any questions about Estonian, problems with some words, etc, don't hesitate and ask! I'll try to help as much as I can.pc2 wrote:the worst is: we tried to search for list of partitive forms of the words in all the Internet, but we it's being impossible to find.
EESTI KEEL
good... so, you mean that most part of the words are regular?
what are the rules for regular partitive?
best regards

If this is to show your impatience, please bear in mind that people who help other people on this forum don't do it 24/24. Sometimes they do some other things, sometimes they even have to get some sleep.pc2 wrote:?...
