Moslem-Muslim

On an American religion forum I was told that the spelling "moslem" is offensive to Muslims. In a dictionary both words are equivalent. Who's right ?

As a converted Muslim, I would rather use "Muslim" than "Moslem", which sounds quite old fashioned.
