A young friend of mine has sent me the following quote or statement in the hope that I could translate it. I have no idea what it means or where it might have come from. I have tried translations word by word but it makes no sense.
I would be enormously grateful if anybody could throw some light on it. I hope it isn't rude!
"In trutina mentis/ dubia fluctuan contraria/ lascivius amor et pudicitia. Sed eligo quod video/ collum jugo praebeo/ ad iugum tamen suave transeo.

As I understand it:
In trutina mentis = on the scales of the mind
dubia fluctuant contraria = vacillating contraries fluctuate,
lascivius amor et pudicitia. = lustful love and chastity,
Sed eligo quod video = but I choose what I see,
collum jugo praebeo = I offer my neck to the yoke (=marriage),
ad iugum tamen suave transeo. = I go over to the yoke, nevertheless, sweetly

Thank you so much for the translation! It's all a very big mystery but it looks like my young friend is going to have something on her mind! Though it may not be as simple as that, come to think of it.
You couldn't by any chance translate the additional last two lines? Or perhaps this is asking too much. Or perhaps I could get a seperate translation.

I think you referred to the two lines of my automatic signature, it is from Hungarian tradition and says "Neither small nor tall, you are just OK for me!"

Thank you for the little, and apt, translation from the Hungarian! Just for interest I did some research and found that the Latin was from some C13 southern German writings by unfrocked priests and students, which were used by Carl Orff in Carmina Burana in the 1930's.
