For those of you who speak multiple languages, how did you learn them? I speak English and Spanish (i'm still perfecting my spanish) and I am going to learn several more languages. I want to maxamize my efforts--In your opinion, what's the best way to learn a foreign language, without actually going to a country where it's spoken (not in the begining, at least).
Thanks!
Para uds. quien hablan muchas idiomas...¿Cómo las aprendiste?
¡Muchas gracias!

Hello !
Don't worry, we won't delete your message.
Spanish might help you understanding this post we wrote in French about how to learn a foreign language.
As far as I'm concerned, I do need a teacher. All alone I get lazy very quickly
So, a teacher, and preferably other students in the class, it's even better for the motivation. At least, if the students have about the same level, and are motivated as well.
I speak French (mother tongue), English (I started at school and I have a BA in English. But the best thing was to go abroad and really speak it !), Breton (I learnt at school and university as well, but I'm from a Breton speaking family, that helps) and Danish (I learnt in Denmark, in Danish evening classes).

In my opinion, unless you are exceptionally gifted, you shouldn't try to 'master' languages if you are not exposed to them regularly.
The key to learning any language is motivation, so I think that you can become very proficient at reading/understanding and writing several languages
Having said that, if you take steps to immerse yuorself in the language I think you can make good progress on the oral part, eg conversation exchange, audiovisual courses, radio films and TV (espacially DVDs, because they offer different languages/subtitles).
Just some thoughts.
