Yellowikis is a NON-COMMERCIAL organisation.
We are an open, free and global business information service run on wiki principals. We use the same system as Wikipedia - but Yellowikis is focussed on businesses. We want to become an important business resource for the future.
We have a main page of 320 words that we need translated into as many languages as possible. We already have English, Finnish, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Ukrianian. We want more.
This is a serious project but because it is non-commercial I am sorry that we cannot pay you. Nobody gets paid for working on Yellowikis - not even me. You should only help if you are interested in making the world a better, fairer place. Of course you name and contact details will also be added to the list of translators and if you help us you can add Yellowikis to your curriculum vitae. The most helpful and energetic translators get a limited edition Yellowikis t-shirt (while stocks last).
You can find a list of languages that we are keen to have translated on our main page. If your language isn't on the list we can add it very easily.
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions as to how we might improve the service.

Some questions and suggestions :
- I've just had a very quick look at the website: why don't you write Українська on the launch page? You have all languages indicated in their own language except Ukrainian and moreover, it's misspelled in English: Ukranian instead of Ukrainian...
- It would be nice if you explained here briefly (even if we can find info on the site, I guess) what your project is about. As I understand, you want to dress a list of businesses? Now what kind of business? And what for? What's the point of that?
- It would be easier for you to get an answer if you told more precisely what you need: which language do you need, what is the approximate amount of work, how specialized are the texts...
As for me, I might be interested in collaborating for a translation to French, depending on your answers to my questions above

I absolutely agree that there is a need for this sort of information on the internet. But I have my reservations.
First, this is quite frankly, a COLOSSAL undertaking.
It is not clear:
- which businesses you are targetting (seems all)
- which geographical areas you are covering (seems all)
- how will you differentiate yourself from other companies doing the same thing. It's easy to say that you will be the biggest, friendliest, most up to date, most predictable...
Also, I have less faith in human nature than you. By allowing people to leave comments and putting a bait out for ecowarriers, you run the risk of getting into some real trouble. The internet is a bit of a free of all, and many people would love the opportunity to slag off companies, sometimes without basis.
Also, I cannot find any information on your official status. There is no guarantee that you won't start selling the information one day.

I am not too worried about vandalism - most companies are added by the company itself - if anyone changes their page we email the owner and they can check that the changes are good. It is very easy to undo changes.
With such a huge project an open wiki system is really the only way. If I told you (or a venture capitalist) that I wanted to raise a few billions of $$$ and recruit 15,000 employees you would still think that it was a crazy idea.
We think that the only way to collect this information is one company at a time. It will take many years - but this is the only way to make it happen.
If it fails then we have lost nothing (well maybe $200) and those lucky people with Yellowikis t-shirts will have a good story to tell their grand-children.

Hi Andreas - I just saw your question about selling the information. Yellowikis data is published under the FDL (Free Document Licence). Anyone can use it for what ever they want. You can read more about this here.
If we sold the information then someone would have to buy it. Why would anyone buy this information that they can get for free?

It seems to me that Wikipedia works fine because the information for the most part is not commercially sensitive, not commercially valuable and it is static.
If you told me that you wanted to raise a few billions of $$$ and recruit 15,000 employees, I would think that you had some chance of achieving your goals.
I do not know about the Free Document Licence but isn't it feasible to change from a 100% non-profitmaking, voluntary-based organsiation to one that charges. A lot of Internet-based enterprises that started out providing free full access have had to start selling some of their services/products to ensure their survival. If you achieved your ideal, I am sure that someone could find a way of making the information commercially viable. For example, if I wanted to find a list of all translation agencies employing who employ over 20 people in all the major anglophone cities of the world, I could perhaps do it myself but I would willingly pay someone 20 Euros to save me the trouble and time. (I concede that a simple query such as this one would be possible if the site had appropriate functionality.)
You also haven't addressed other points. What is the official status of your organisation? Where is the enterprise based? I would feel reassured by reading small print on the site.

There is nothing on Yellowikis that is commercially sensitive. It is free on most Yellowpages and you can find the same information on Google - All we want to do it make it free to edit. Just like Wikipedia - you can find the same information with google - but having it in one place makes it easier to edit and keep up-to-date.
I think we could change to be a commercial organisation - but I'm not sure why we would do it. If I do you have my blessing to pay €100 and set up Yellowikis2.org, anyone can do what I have done. I can help you do it. Start at www.mediawiki.org.

YP is so well established, people will consult it almost by reflex.Companies can pay extra to have more prominent ads. OR they will use names like AAA Plumbing Service to appear at the top of each category.
Information in Yellowikis would be commercially sensitive if there was no control of who posted what and of the veracity of the submitted information. Also it is commercially sensitive in terms of which ‘hits’ would appear first, for example.
Good point about encyclopadia publishers. There is nothing to stop someone publishing information gleaned from Wikipedia I suppose. Just goes to show that there almost any info can be exploited commercially.
Wikinews is static, isnt it? A news item posted today will be the same in 2012. From the scope of your project, I think keeping everything up to date is a big issue.

What do you mean by "half done translation"? do you mean your translator is still working on it, or do you need someone else to finish it?

You could add a new language main page. or a new business or an organisation. Yellowikis is free and open. This means that everyone has the right to copy, to edit, to transmit, to publish commercially or non-commercially. This is what makes it such a powerful idea.
The french translation needs finishing. I don't know who started it but if you want to help you just go to: http://www.yellowikis.org/wiki/index.php/Accueil and click on the "edit" link. You can't break it and if you make a mistake someone else will fix it.
If any translators want to add their translation companies to Yellowikis you should add this industry code to the bottom of your page:[[Category:NAICS:541930]]
This will automatically add you to the category list of translators.
Remember Google indexes Yellowikis every day. If you add your information to Yellowikis you will help people find you via Google searches (and Google maps)
