English to Sanskrit Text: Brahma-vihara

Post by Alison »

I have recently been researching and learning about Buddhism and am particularly interested in the concept and significance of the Brahma-vihara. Thus far, I have been able to find the 4 words translated, but not into the sanskrit text itself.

Love: Maitri
Compassion: Karuna
Joy: Mudita
Equnimity: Upeksa

I am also interested in the translation for the word "Hope"- I haven't even found the word translation of that.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
One final question- what is the difference between the sanskrit where the text is connected with a line at the top of the text, and the text that is separate characters? I have been finding both through my research, but as of yet, no explination.

Thank you very much
