preposition - translate 'into' or 'to' a language -

Hi all.

I wonder whether anyone can shed some light on this matter.

Are they any good arguments for preferring one preposition over the other? Most people seem to be convinced that one or the other is 'correct'.

Personally, I think it depends on the context, so I would say
'to translate from English to French'
'to translate into French'

Any thoughts?[/b]

As for your examples, I would agree on the use of to or into.
I don't know the rules, if there are such rules in english.
Mostly, I will play it by ear. In all languages by the way. At least those I'm familiar with.

I would say both are correct in both sentences, but I am no native speaker, that's just what I feel

According to the "Harrap's Shorter" one must say:
to translate from.........into ........

That's just my two cents as I'm no native speaker.
I had always used 'into' until I saw 'to' in a native speaker's profile.
I did some google search and here's what I found: " translate from English into French": 629000 entries
"translate from English to French: 1 250 000 entries.
