Afrikaans-English

Post by pfletch »

Last post had confused fingers in the subject line. Excuse it (or delete it) please.

I received a postcard from some smart-aleck Dutch friends on holiday in South Africa. I figured out most of it, but cannot find a translation for "ontsettend," as in "Ons geniet onstettend baie!" I have found "onstettend" and "onstettend baie" on many websites but cannot find a translation of "onstettend." Can anyone help?

Hi I think you made a mistake because I don't know the word "ontstettend" but "ontsettend" does exist is means "terribly" the sentence means

We enjoyed it very much

(The Afrikaans sentence is actually wrong because it should be "ons het dit ontsettend geniet" or "ons het dit baie geniet" ontsettend baie is just an over-exejurated.

Thank you very much! The woman who wrote it hasn't lived in South Africa for many years, left when she was a child, so that might explain the mistakes. ;p I answered her in French.
