What foreign languages did (or do) you study in school?

Post by j u d i t h »

Good morning! :hello:

What foreign languages did (or do) you all study in school and did (do) you like those subjects?

I'll start :)

English - studied it for 9 years, liked it in the very beginning, hated it when we just did grammar stuff for about 5 years or so, and loved it again when we started to read novels, plays, articles etc.

Russian - studied it for 7 years and loved it most of the time

French - studied it for 2 1/2 years and thought it was okay

Italian - studied it for 1/2 year (on voluntary basis) and thought it was okay.

How about you guys?

English:7 years, and still love it
Spanish:5 years. This language is real lace...!I use to love it more than i do today. The thing i remember the most is grammar, and my difficulty to learn the conjugations by heart. For my final year in high-school, i had decided to glue all the mains verbs and their conjugations on the inside cover of my file, so that when the teacher would ask us to shut the books for an oral test, i would get some little help. In order to do this, i went to a new bookshop in town with my friend, it was so cheap that everybody went there (teachers and pupils...)and asked the shop assistant for photocopies "in small"..."How small"?he asked, and my loud friend almost shouted in the shop"as small as possible, it's for cribs!"(I hid myself behind the photocopier). :loljump:
Italian:I didn't learn it at school, but it's like 3 years i'm kind of studying it on my own.I like the speed that you can actually talk italian, i find it easier than spanish, for example.

Hi :hello:

Oh, did you pick a new picture, Serenita? Or do I just have a bad memory? Who is that girl?

:loljump: Hehe, I liked that photocopy-story! How did that test go then?

Thanks for answering!

Hello kokoyaya! :hello:

Thanks for answering!

Ehmmm, what's Occitan? I don't think I've ever heard that!
How do you study Breton? Do you attend a language course or do you just learn from books?

See you!

Hello :)

It's a group of languages spoken by some people in the South/South-West of France. Amongst them are "gascon", "languedocien", "provençal". It's very similar to catalan.
How do you study Breton? Do you attend a language course or do you just learn from books?
Assimil (a French book to learn languages) and by the website Kervaker.
I'm also a member of Toulouse Celtic Circle: it helps :)

Hi Judith!

Don't tell me you've never heard of Mafalda! She's the heroin of a famous argentinian comic strip.Quino, the author is also very famous for his satirical cartoons, they're often striking but always put in a nice manner.Well, as forMafalda, she's only 6 years old, but she's fond of politics. Her friends and family are also very special, i'm sure you'll fall for her little brother Guille...Image

Ehm... well... I hardly know any comics (Mickey Mouse and Asterix sound quite familiar, but that's it  )

Thanks for the link, Serenita, I'll have a look! :)

At school I studied :
English : I liked it, but I forgot everything

Good afternoon, B.

Hi Bernadette :hello:

Thanks for answering. Do you mean you actually studied Russian or was it just a dream which haven't come true?

Judith,
It was a dream in chilhood. I study russian ... since 3 days, alone (Assimil on line). But I often listen songs and lieder (specially Glinka and Lina Mkrtchyan, a great contralto). It's realy beautifull.
Really, I just speak french.
I hope you can understand me, my english became so strange ( may be, I could learn it again). Sincerely yours, B.

I have studied Spanish for five years in school. Outside of the classroom I have studied Japanese, French, Russian, Chinese, a little Arabic and Urdu, and a little Italian too. I love them all! I learn outside of class, mostly by means of native speakers, which can be difficult sometimes. :) It's a somewhat daunting task because, except for Japanese, I've only just started these languages. (I have four years of Japanese, by the way.) But I wouldn't trade them for anything. :D
