i only manage 3 languages:madarin,cantonese (chinese)and english.
and that i find "what does it/xx mean" becomes very useful~!~
would ya like to share the phrase in ur ow =n language? or maybe you can share more~you are welcome.
let me show first:
madarin: zhe ge shi shen me yi si?这个是什么意思? (THIS)(IS)(WHAT) (MEANING)
cantonese: mie yi si?咩意思?

In Korean
무슨 뜻이냐 ? (mu-seun tteu-shi-nya ?) **VERY** informal style
무슨 뜻이야 ? (mu-seun tteu-shi-ya ?) informal style
무슨 뜻이예요 ? (mu-seun tteu-shi-ye-yo ?) common formal style
문슨 뜻입니까 ? (mu-seun tteu-shim-ni-kka ?) very formal style
The word-to-word translation is "what meaning is ?"

In French :
Qu'est-ce-que ça veut dire ?
The word-to-word translation is "what this want say ?" - the verb "to mean something" in French is usually "want to say something" although another verb, found more in the written language, exists ("signifier")

Breton : Petra sinifi xxx ? (we find here the "formal" French verb that nyarzduk talked about :signifier). The word to word translation is "what mean xxx ?
If you ask more specifically for a translation you may ask : petra vez graet gand xxx (e saozneg) ? What is done with xxx (in English) ?

Danish : Hvad betyder xxx ? (what means xxx ?)

Swedish: Vad betyder xx?
Norwegian: Hva betyr xx?

Brazilian Portuguese: Que significa xx?
Romanian: Ce înseamnă xx?
Modern Greek: Τι σημαίνει xx; [ti siméni] (Note that Greeks use ";" for "?")

In French, you can also say ça veut dire quoi ? (informal) or que cela veut-il dire (formal).
