Is there a language you always wanted to learn but never did

Post by j u d i t h »

Hello! :hello:

Is there a language you always wanted to learn but never did so far? Which language is it, why do you want to study it and why haven't you started yet?

Here's my own answer:

Icelandic

It's a very beautiful and interesting language, but it's hard to find a cheap language course. I can't afford expensive language courses like Berlitz or something like that, and I don't know anybody who speaks Icelandic who could teach me something, so I haven't started yet... But I will do that some day!! ;)

Looking forward to reading yours answers!

Good night!

Hi Judith,

For me it was russian.I really wanted to learn it in my childhood, my mother even taught me the cyrillic alphabet and i could write my name in russian, but then i was talked out of it by my cousins(they found it useless, but it's the opposite now where i live!) and what's more, there wasn't any school around teaching that language before high school.By the time i reached this level, i wasn't interested anymore in learning russian!

Hi Serenita! :hello:

Thanks for answering!
Oh, I can almost hear your cousins talking it out of you! :loljump: When I was starting the seventh grade at school (12 years old) we had to choose our second foreign language (English was the first one), and we had the choice between French, Latin and Russian. Russian was very exotic at that time (former West Germany), and there were only two schools in town where you could learn Russian at that time. I chose Russian because I liked the idea of learning a language which nobody else I knew could speak (or read!! ;)).
Many of my friends and family members thought that was kind of stupid - totally useless! But I never regret my choice! It's such a beautiful language and not useless at all! :)

What about you? Are you interested in learning Russian maybe later some day?

See you!

:loljump: Hi Serenita!!
I've got quite a long "to learn when I'm retired"-list:

Chinese
Arabic
Dutch
Gaelic
etc. etc.

I hope that I don't have to wait so long with Icelandic! ;)

See you!

To tell you the truth I would love to learn Itailan. I've always wanted to go to Italy, to walk where Caesar and Octavian walked. My brother says it will never be useful for me but maybe one day, maybe in college, I'll be able to go! ;) :hello:

You should forget about your brother and learn it if you want :loljump: Besides, if you plan to visit Italy one day, it sure will be of a great use.
I guess spanish, for example, seems more useful, though everything depends on what you intend to do.And, of course,on your own personal taste.Image
PS: Thanks for the avatar :D

No language is useless!! I use to tell people who complain about weird choice of languages to learn: If you live in the Netherlands, like Polish poetry and work for a company with relations to Finland, the most important languages for you will be Dutch, Finnish and Polish. There's not much use for the "important" languages English, German, Spanish or French then ;)
If you like Italy and Italian, Italian seems to be one of the most useful and important languages for you! Go ahead! :sun:

well i live in croatia and croatian is in the same group of languages as russian and polish...are(slavic group). i've learnt russian for one year and it's very difficult to learn it.
Still, Croatian is i think the most difficult language in slavic group. we have 7 cases, 13 tenses, many many pronouns and so on....

i would like to learn portuguese, polish and swedish so much.
I agree with ...somebody that English Spanish and German are the most wanted languages in every ocasiones. If u want to learn italian learn it, with russian and icelandic same thing

People languages are so beautiful i could learn them whole my life without rest :hello: :hello: :hello:

I think I would jump at the chance to learn any language I don't know -- which is most of them! :) Well, except maybe Spanish ... I guess I find it boring. Dunno why. I could probably get use out of that one living in the US.

I've always been interested in eclectic things, and language is no exception. The only 'normal' language I've learned is French. Of the languages I know (aside from my native tongue, English), my best is Klingon. I love it because it's so different from English, and probably because I'm a Star Trek fan. My Latin is busy rusting away to nothing, which is bad. I need to remedy that. Oh, yeah, and I have some materials for learning Lenape, the language of the Lenni-Lenape Indians (also known as the Delware Indians), who used to live in these parts. Haven't got too far with that just yet.

If I had to pick a few languages to learn, I'd probably choose Russian, maybe Swahili, Polish for sure (I'm part Polish -- I have this vague memory of my grandmother singing me a song in Polish -- something about an apple tree...). I'm interested in Japanese as well. So many languages, so little time! (So little brain power/space!) :loljump:

I've just signed on as a translator of English into Klingon, so if you need anything, let me know!

I do not really know which language to learn. Polish is an interesting
language but Danish too. But I do not really love Indonesian, not at all
but I can understand that other can love it.

It is really interesting to see which languages we love, it was a good
idea for a topic.

hi judith,
well your topics are always very interesting and raise so many discussions on languages and linguistic questions in our forum. congrats!!!!

In my opinion, learning languages is a very beautiful occupation, but the point I would like to make is that it isn't as easy as it seems. I have studied English, French, and Italian, but my mother tongue is Albanian. well, I guess I know pretty well the languages I have listed above, but still, I am eager to know them as a native speaker. and that is very very difficult. well, with regard to Italian, I consider it my second language.According to the others, I read and speak them, but it would be a little too audacious to consider them my second languages, even though my knowledge is above the average knowledge of normal people, at least here in Italy where I live.
People who love languages, are much more demanding with them selves than other ones. I love languages and I would like to possess them and master them in the best possible way.
at the moment, I am keeping myself busy with German, I am trying to improve it. day by day, I realize how difficult it is to remember words and acquire an active knowledge of it.

BYE!!! :) :)

Hey, Laura !

It's a bit off-topic, but as Judith is German, and I'm also trying to refresh my old knowledges of German, there's a topic called "German native speaker", in which we speak in German ;)

Tschüss,
Geoffrey

hi Geoffrey :) :hello:
I wrote something some time ago and I think it may be useful for people like we two.
None answered to my letter, maybe because it was crammed with grammatical or lexical errors.
