The Pen Pals Thread

Post by Runa27 »

I did a search and did not find anything similar to this, so I figured I'd start one myself. :)

In English, "pen pal" (also spelled "penpal") is a friend you communicate with mostly through writing.

Since one of the best ways to learn a language, or to retain your knowledge of a language, is to communicate with native speakers, I thought it would be nice to start a thread where people can find a native speaker in a language they'd like to practice more often, and become pen pals (through PM or email).

I'll start: I would like to find a pen pal who speaks fluent Spanish. I'm learning it now. I like Japanese animation and comics (also known as anime and manga, respectively), I love languages, enjoy the art of film and animation, have a casual enjoyment of music in various genres and styles, and both read and write a lot of science fiction and fantasy stories. I'm thinking of becoming a film-maker or screenwriter, in addition to writing prose fiction and comics (both of which I'm already doing, though not in a "professional" capacity) and considering translation, editing, or journalism as my "day job". I'm currently enrolled in college in the U.S. I also have a somewhat geeky interest in dub acting and collection of animation cels and Japanese figurines and action figures (they make some really pretty ones!).

If anyone shares similar interests and/or a similar love of languages and speaks fluent Spanish, please respond! :) I'd really like having a pen pal!

You can contact me through PM, or through my Studio's email, StudioYokai AT gmail.com ;)

Hi Runa27

Great idea.

Just a note - you should write your email diffrently so as not to attract spam mail, for example usnig AT instead of the sign with spaces ebfore and after.

Just a suggestion, Runa: hope you are aware that we have a whole forum in Spanish here. So you can simply go there and start talking with anybody about anything. I think it's a quite easy way ! :D

Oh, I knew that. :) But I thought it would be nice to have a thread like this where people who want a pen pal in a foreign language can find one.

And ANTHOS: Good point!

EDIT: Is there a Spanish term for "pen pal"?

Correspondiente? Perhaps you wanted to say "corresponsal". Correspondiente means another thing (I believe the word in English for it is corresponding).

Just my 2 cents :D

Hope you find a good pen pal in Spanish, Runa27, it is my native language but I am too lazy to write with regularity. Good luck anyway!

Depends. What's the (infinitive) verb for "to correspond" in Spanish?

OK, Arkayn, you were right, "correspondiente" is a correct translation for pen pal, in its second meaning, according to the RAE dictionary (it's just that I hadn't seen it with that meaning until now). Sorry, I didn't want to confuse anyone, and I'm deeply ashamed

I better shut up now.

Ah, that's OK. :hello: At least you were able to confirm it on another look!

I think it can be translated as: corresponder, concordar, equivaler. Also "to correspond with someone" means "mantener correspondencia con alguien" (according to my English/Spanish dictionary).
