A person who doesn't eat fish but does eat meat.

Post by Servien »

Hi I am looking for a word which means "a person who doesn't eat fish but does eat meat" in Ancient Greek "anichtyophagos" has been suggested... but I am also looking for the verb like "vegetarianism" but than something like "anichtyophagism" or something like that.

I'd like it to be translated in: Latin, Ancient Greek, Greek.
And if possible other languages too! Thanks in advance :D

:) Well, ancient greek roots is the best way to make a new word in such a case. It is very hard to make compouned words from latin, since that language does not create words easily, unlike greek.

:) Notionally, you have to write "anichthyophag-" (-ist, -ism, -eous), for the greek word is "ikhthus". But each language (even french and german) seems to waver betwenn "ichthyo-" and "ichtyo-" (-phageous, -logy, -saurus, etc.).

However, icht(h)yophagism, icht(h)yophagist and icht(h)yophageous do exist in sciences (in french, german, english, with specifical endings). So anichtyophagism, anichthyophagist and anichtyophageous are very good, wether with "h" or not.

:sun: But fishes are very good, you know ...

Je ne mange jamais de poisson, j'aime pas ça, je me définis comme "ichthyophobe" ;)

I never eat fish, I don't like it, I define myself as an "ichthyophob" ;)

I never eat meat but fish and I say usually I am vegetarian. I don't know exactly the word to mean both the way to be vegetarian and to eat fish.

On peut être végétarien et manger du poisson ?

Est-ce végétalien le fait de manger que ce qui n'est pas animal, c'est à dire pas de poisson ni même d'oeufs ?

Can you be a vegetarian and eat fish ?

Is is vegetalian the fact to eat only what is not from animals, ie neither fish nor eggs ?

If I may say so, some people pretend to be vegetarian but eat fish or even chicken anyway. I don't eat red meat, nor chicken but fish, eggs, milk, butter...

Yes, vegetalianism includes only vegetal food and excludes all kind of animal food such as flesh, eggs, milk and so on. Soya milk often replace animal milk whom you can yoghurt, tofu, and stuff with - I should think about posting the recipe. Soya is very appreciated by vegetarians and vegetalians for its high nutritive value.

as far as we concern, there may not be a word for "anichtyophagism", "anichtyophagist", "anichtyofageous" etc. in Portuguese. but if there was, it would be "anictiofagismo", "anictiófago", and "anictiofágico".
Merci de corriger notre français si nécessaire.
