I'd Like Some Help with Danish slang translations

Post by MAvericker »

Hello. I'm interested in and am doing research on Danish youth, street and college slang for a porject I'm working on.

I'd like to know what are Danish slang terms and expressions for:

tough guy
tough girl
tough woman
strong guy
strong girl
strong woman
guy prone to fighting
girl prone to fighting
cool guy
cool girl
gangster
punk
delinquent boy
delinquent girl

Please list as many Danish slang terms and expressions for each term as possible. Thank you. :D

Is there a shorter way to say "en pige med fødderne på jorden"?

Can I use terms like "hard pige", "wild pige" and "toffe pige" for "tough girl"?

I would say "sej pige" - it means tough girl but has a flavour of hip girl too,
a girl with both feet on the ground is a sensible girl and that is in ordinary Danish "en fornuftig pige" or "jordbunden pige" earthbound girl.

I'll look into the slang, but a lot of those is often of English origin.

Here are some suggestions, not all are very much slang

tough guy = rå fyr, sej fyr, hård negl (hard as nails)
tough girl = sej pige, sej tøs, sej kælling
tough woman = barsk dame, barsk kælling, hård kælling
strong guy = stærk fyr, kraftkarl
strong girl = stærk pige or tøs
strong woman = stærk kvinde, stærk kælling (strong bitch)
guy prone to fighting= slagsbroder (brawlingbro (-ther)
girl prone to fighting = rivejern (grater)
cool guy = sej fyr, cool fyr
cool girl = sej pige ( or tøs), cool tøs or pige
gangster = bandit, gangster
punk = gadedreng
delinquent boy = småkriminel fyr
delinquent girl = småkriminel tøs

Tomboy - I can't recall just now, but I think "vildbasse" is useable here too

wild girl = vildbasse
wild guy = vildbasse
powerfully-built male = kraftkarl, muskelbundt (bunch of muscles)
powerfully-built female? = muskelbundt (is useable)

Hello solbjerg. How are you? Thank you for your help.

I'd like to know, can I use " rå pige/tøs/kælling" or "hård pige/tøs" for "tough girl"? Please let me know. :D

rå pige

Post by solbjerg »

It depends on the connection you want to use it in
most used would be tough girl (sej pige) probably the most versatile today, hard girl (hård pige) to denote that she can handle most anything without a murmur, if you use tøs instead of pige you say at the same time that she is a bit without moral or at least loose about it.

Thank you. Can I also use:

wild guy-wilde fyr
wild girl-wilde pige/tøs?

It again depends on the connection it is said in
but vild fyr, vild gut is ok in some contexts, most ly though more about fairly young people, if he is more than forty I would regards him as a bit crazy too.
Almost the same would go for vild pige I think
