Favorite Island for Seals in Germany

Post by Mathea »

Hello!

I'd like to know how Jungnamensand got its name. Jungnamensand is a barrier island near Amrum in the North Sea. This is the favorite landing spot in Germany for gray seals, with the highest number of seal pups, 25-30, born here every winter.

I'm wondering if the name “Jungnamensand” means “Island of Baby Names (for Seal Pups)”. After all, “Jungnamen” means “baby names” in German. And I believe all seal pups born in Germany are given a first name. (For example, Caspar.) Plus, “sand” in German often refers to a sand-island. Jungnamensand is such an island, rather than a sandbank where the pups would drown at high tide.

Even though it sounds plausible, I have to wonder how old this island-name is and how old the seal-pup-name-giving custom is. If this island got its name before seals started getting their own names, then what the heck does Jungnamensand mean?

If anyone has any ideas or information about any of this, I'd really appreciate it.

Danke schön!
