HELP: Russian to English

Post by sara »

Hi All,

Please someone help me to understand this sentence. It is taken from a scientific article in russian.
"Формирование химического состава водотоков озера происходит среди устойчивых к выщелачиванию горных комплексов архея и протерозоя, представленных преимущественно изверженными и метаморфическими породами. Это определяет общность химического облика поверхностных вод бассейна и озера."

It would be appreciated if you could tell me the english meaning of the following words:
- водоток
- комплексов архея и протерозоя
- изверженный
- порода
- облик

I know some russian, but there are many unfamiliar words in this sentence.
Thanks in advance.

Complicated! scientific texts are difficult to understand even for the native speakers. But well, we can always try:

водоток - is basically another word for "current" perhaps there is a difference on the scientific basis od understanding, but the idea is still this....current.
ok, found the exact definition of водоток - водный поток с движением воды по направлению уклона в углублении земной поверхности (река, ручей, канал). so it is a current that moves along with the deepening of the soil...
then, here are the definitions of

i believe we are dealing with a kind of epoch division....
изверженный means something like "igneous, eruptive, volcanic"
порода=rock; layer, bed, stratum
облик=look (appearance) but here it is supposed to be taken figuratively.

This is only the translations/definitions of some words - I'm not a specialist in geology thus cannot really help you in anyway. These here are mostly terms, but i believe that the idea conveyed is that "waters" of the lake and basin, that is their chemical "appearance," is similar since they were "formed" under the influence of similar factors...

Thanks a lot, Demona! :)
Your translation helped me greatly.
Yes, the text is written in a very complicated scientific language with many geological terms.
