what is a back catalogue of images? an old collection of images, an old catalogue or a sort of archive?
Does anyone know the translation in Italian?

In music : Back Catalogue = catalogue of songs written by an artist/composer and from which he still earns royalties.

For pictures... ? What is the context ?

well, the context is digital art.
that's the original sentence (the artist is speaking):

"sometimes I take a photograph or a scan as a starting point, and grow a picture around it. Other times, I just sit with my source materials - CDs, the back catalogue - and let things happen."
