"Gora"?

Post by Crescent »

Hi! Could someone tell me if the hindi / urdu word "gora", as applied to a white skinned foreigner in the context of a general conversation in English, is demeaning? And if it is, to which point?
(in clear: how angry should I be with the person who used this word in my presence, lol?)
Thanks for your help

I know this word from the comedy series Goodness Gracious Me

I suppose it all depends on hows it's used. I don't think it's necessarily demeaning - I certainly wouldn't look at it from a Gora-centric viewpoint!

गोरा : light-skinned or white skinned, Caucasian
just another way to say European
sometimes may mean fair-complexionned; attractive
