There are a few tags available on this forum, for example "b" to apply bold on your text, but if I actually type the real tag (with square brackets instead of quotation marks), you will see the text in bold and not the tag itself.

So that's what the tag code is for, you can type out the tags, like [b], [i], [u], [img], [url]... and they will be displayed instead of being interpretated. It is useful when explaining to someone how to use the tags.
