I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for translating. That was so kind of you and I appreciate your thoughts. Yes, it is not right what he is doing and it is very inconsiderate. I don't speak spanish, very few words and he speaks fluent english so that is all we speak in the house is english, but he is fluent in spanish as well which I'm not. That is why the emails are in spanish he is speak with someone who is also spanish but she doesn't know english. But I thank you again for you help.

:D Hi, Heynow123, you're welcome! (although I don't think I've done anything special) I'm sorry that you have this kind of communication problems with your man. But if these messages were received and not sent by him then there's nothing wrong with him (at least in this case). It's possible just junk mail that someone sent him, you, or both, because, you see the letters are intended for a girl, not for a man. And if he's the one who wrote them, then he doesn't really know the girl, he didn't even see her! The writer is really affectionate with the girl, yes, but, I don't think you should think the worst, perhaps this girl received the letters and was asking him to translate them, because (perhaps) she's not really that good in Spanish? Well, again, I know nothing about the details, just guessing. But I think you deserve to know what the letters say because, well, if I were to receive mail written in another language, I would like to know what it says (boyfriend or not boyfriend).

Again, I send you my best wishes, and, just for your information, I detected three mistakes in my (humble, really) translation: in the first letter it should be "my brown sugar" not "sweet sugar", and in the second I should have written "after I finish writing" not "after I finished writing" and in the end it is "even if I don't know YOU I already miss you". But the general meaning is well, I hope. (English is not my native language).

Now I am really finishing, good luck!!
:hello:

Hi Maria,

Thanks again for all your help. Well, I read the emails to him and do you know what he said? He said some of the words are wrong. He said some words and accents are different depending on where your from. Can you believe that? No, he speaks spanish, and this was his emails to someone. I know who the girl is as well. So, I really have no idea what I'm gonna do, but he told me fine, he won't email her and he'll tell her not to email him either. He also said, some spanish countries use these type of words because they're more endearing than what americans use. Now, I don't know how true that is, but I can't argue it without any evidence. If I do get another one, could you translate it for me again? I don't know if she will email again or not.

Thanks again for all your help. I see your only a guest but do you have a PM option somwhere?

Dear Heynow123, I haven't registered yet because I still don't know this site very much. I've discovered it a few months ago when looking for a specific dictionary, but I've rarely visited it since then due to lack of time. I'm very grateful, however, to the people who maintain it, as I love learning languages and this place is very helpful for that purpose (and for talking with people who actually speaks in and about those languages). But, as I said before, I don't have so much time and I'm a bit reluctant to become a member of a place where I won't be very active. I'll send you a PM, however, if I register in the near time, but I can't promise anything.

And about what your boyfriend said, he may be right, Spanish America is a very big continent and customs and language vary greatly from one region to another. I live in the South of Argentina, in South America, and I know little about the Spanish that people speak in other countries. And although I recently got a degree in translation in my country (after only three years of studying to get it) I'm still very inexperienced. As I see it, your mate is trying to keep his Spanish alive and this girl is one of the few Spanish-speaking people who has kept in touch with him, and he tries to show how grateful he is by calling her by sweet names, as "beautiful girl", "my darling", "my brown sugar", "peanut cornet", which might be common forms of address between friends of different genders in the place where she lives, I don't really know.

I'm sorry I cannot help you more. I hope you can solve your problems with him soon. I send you my best wishes. Good luck! :hello:

Don't hesitate to register, Maria A! Registering is free (of charge and of duty!). Registering does not mean that you have to comme very often, everyone is free to check in as often as they want!

Minimizing that Internet flirting will not help them communicate... and generally such private topics should be taken to "mp" (private messages, for registered users)

Well thank you Maria for being who you are and how kind you have been to me in my dilemma. Well he is from Colombia and so is she and he does get to speak spanish when he wants to a guy that works with him so it's not like he never gets to speak it you know?

But I appreciate all of your help and much luck in your translation endeavours. Hope to talk to you soon.

Thank you Beaumont for the info. I did do that one time, but the person never got back to me? Maybe I didn't do it right, if I need it again, I'll try that too.

Thanks again.

Learn Spanish in Self-defense

Post by candi »

Hi heynow123,

If you really want this guy, you should consider learning some Spanish or at least a little Spanglish so you can tell him sweet things in his own language. You can pick up lots of things just watching Spanish tv or listening to Spanish radio, but why not ask him to teach you ?

Both of you should speak Spanish with your kids so they don't find themselves feeling as linguistically isolated as you feel speaking only English. Let them learn now while it's so easy and natural for them; they'll thank you for it when they're older.

Speaking his language only with a guy at work obviously isn't satisfying enough for your man. Imagine having only one person to speak English with and having kids who don't speak it.

If you want him, you're going to have to do more than ask him not to flirt in Spanish online. He seems very romantic and affectionate; he will get what he hungers for somewhere, you would be wise to have it be with you if you don't want to lose him.

Wake up girl,
candi

Hi Candi,

He speaks fluent english though. He says he loves to speak english as it has been very hard for him over here in the states learning it since he first came over here. He's been here since 1986. He loves to learn new words and phrases in english. He asks me all the time to teach him new words he doesn't know. Him, not talking in spanish enough is not what the problem is. I do know a few words of spanish and our girls are a little young yet to basically learn spanish but our 2 year old does know a few words in spanish, either way they get it taught in school when they're older, it's a requirement.

Thanks for your insight though, I do appreciate it. I will ask him if it bothers him that I don't speak spanish but I really don't think that's what it is.
