Traduction/Tradução/Translation/Traducción

Post by João Sembraço »

I need some help. I wanna translate these two quotations into english (or portuguese, whatever), especially the parts in red color:

a) "Ce témoignage prouve qu'à l'époque hellénistique notre traité était connu sous un titre qu'Andronicos a récusé en dénonçant l'apparentement de ce traité et des Topiques."

b) "Tout ce qui ne traitait pas de ces éléments, dans la seconde partie du traité, était a priori menacé d'athétèse."

(Are-you a classical scholar or student ? I am sorry, my english is pathetic, I think the other members could help you, better than I)

Je précise juste (en français) qu'une athétèse, c'est le rejet par un grammairien antique ou par un exégète d'un passage considéré comme erroné, mal placé ou apocryphe (qui n'est pas été écrit par l'auteur).

"Athétèse" in English is "Athetesis", and in Spanish "Atétesis".

According to Andronicos, there has been electoral alliances so he denounced the treaty. Not easy to translate this sentence in tne same way :(
I don't know what is or are Topique

First of all, here we are talking about a treatise (treaty is the political translation) .
Knowing that Andronicos was the one who collected the work of Aristote to produce the books we can read nowadays, I'd say that at the time part of this work was brought under a title that Andronicos disaproved saying that this treatise was too similar to another one called the Topiques.

It seems that you can actually translate Topiques by Topics

It rather seems to be about (possibly ancient) exegesis, as Sisyphe mentions: some book (treatise) had a title, which Andronicos did not want to use because the book was too close (apparenté = "akin") to another book called Topiques (he considered it as a variant and not as a book deserving to have its own title).
So except some subjects, some part of the book was threatened to be rejected (from his edition or compilation) as "athetesis" = not to be placed there (he thought it was a fake or it was put there by mistake).

Olivier translates it as I did but please, please don't say "treaty" BUT "treatise" and take a look at this site for some translations of titles in english:
